Who's Scamming Whom?

A Facebook friend posted this little vignette today:

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.”

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!”

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?”

The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”

So -- is the kid a clever capitalist? Or is he a clever recipient of government (givernment?) handouts?

  1. Heh! I saw that one coming...after it smacked me between the eyes.

Good one...headed to Facebook...and once again, the loop is closed!

  2. In this story, there is no mention of the giver being a government entity, so I can't say the kid is on the dole.

Neither has the kid done anything productive. He has not produced a good or service and brought it to market, so I can't call him a clever capitalist.

Without a word, he was able to separate a fool from his money. So being neither capitalist nor socialist, I declare that this kid is instead just plain awesome.

  3. I'll go with Inno.

wv: worre. What I'm ate up with. I tried to make some stupid association with Peter Lorre but failed. Oh, well.

  4. Andy -- Facebook, the new "source!"

Inno and Buck -- I'm thinking he might be a surreptitious grant writer. He gets money from a source and funnels it to a vendor and his own tummy on a hot day. He is, nonetheless, just plain awesome.

Buck taught me how to do italics!
